The Lower Red Lion

The Lower Red Lion, St Albans

Pub's the star

TV viewers who switched on their sets on Sunday might have caught a glimpse of a local landmark thrown back in time. The Lower Red Lion pub in Fishpool Street, St Albans, was featured on ITV's wartime detective drama Foyle's War. Producers of the programme, which stars Michael Kitchen, liked the pub's unique name so much they rewrote the script. Said licensee David Worcester: "In the original script the pub was called The Queen's Head but they liked our sign so much they changed the name."

The episode was filmed over three days in June and filming in Fishpool Street was not always straightforward. Said David: "On one occasion they brought in a fibre-glass pillarbox to cover the parking bay meters. But as soon as the director said 'action', someone ran into shot and posted a letter!"

Eastbourne Bandstand

The current bandstand was built in 1931. The promenade area features as a tea pavilion in two episodes, Eagle Day - Bruce Leighton-Morris and Andrew have tea there - and The Funk Hole - Sam's attempt to cheer up Andrew and Collier strolls there with Milner. It isn't clear whether the promenades feature as themselves or if they are supposed to be located in Hastings, probably the latter.

Mrs Seymour says: "It is a very up-market, award-winning venue; the waitresses wear black dresses with little white aprons and caps as in pre-war days and the tea is the most expensive in the region. The tea room is on the part of the seafront called the Redoubt, as there is a fortress there; part of the chain of Martello Towers that were built along this section of the south east coast to repel Napoleon's invasion."
