Scenes Cut From the US Screening on PBS

  • After Violet leaves the fuel depot office with her wages, Mrs Bennett complains to her husband about how unhappy she is with his flirting and her lot in life.

  • Mr Bennett ogles first Connie and then Sam while they're washing the trucks.

  • When Milner and Foyle visit Frank Gannon at the club the dialogue at the end where they are both leaving the club has been cut. Milner is angry -- "he was laughing at us, sir."

  • As Sam gets her undercover papers and Foyle says to Sam: "Don't let me regret it!", they cut his added reminder for her to get out at the slightest sign of danger.

"And I just want to say, em… please don't let me regret it... And if you feel yourself at any time to be in any danger whatsoever, you just get out of there."

  • After Andrew arrives at the fuel depot and see Sam, he and Violet walk off hand-in-hand but the part of the scene where he says that he and Sam stopped seeing each other "Ages ago" and Sam responds with "totally!" has been cut.

  • In the depot office, Bennett's wife, who works there, queries the requisition slip delivered by Andrew, saying that it is a big order and why was it brought by a pilot officer? Bennett says "Don't ask me" and Mrs Bennett speculates that if they are laying in that much fuel there must be a huge operation planned.

  • The scene showing Sam in Foyle's office explaining the book-keeping and fuel delivery systems is intact until the part where Sam concludes that Mr Bennett couldn't possibly be stealing fuel. Milner says Mr Bennett would have to have the tanker driver on his side and then the customer at the other end. Sam adds "And his wife, too." Milner says "And yet there's still 3% missing." Sam tells Foyle that she's seen Andrew at the depot. Foyle asks what he was doing at the depot. Sam replies, "He didn't say." Foyle: "Oh. I'll ask him!" All cut. They go straight to the scene with Andrew and Rex and Foyle in the restaurant without explanation, so we don't know that Andrew has a girlfriend he's keeping secret from his father.

  • There were some small cuts during the nightclub scene -- some of the dialogue between Sam and O'Halloran is gone (like where she asks him where he's from), and the shot of Gannon watching Connie and Rex dancing -- but nothing major. But the following scene, where Milner and Foyle talk about the fight, and where the possibility of O'Halloran being IRA is discussed - cut.

  • The scene where Connie delivers the fuel to the guy in the woods has another critical omission. Her angry remark, "tell him from me that there are plenty of stories I can tell, and that is a threat" has been cut! Another major cut since it provides a huge potential motive for her murder that night.

  • Andrew fans will miss the short scene where he needles the bartender about not getting served due to starting the little scrap the night before.

  • After Sam finds Connie's body and Foyle and Milner come, there are two noticeable cuts. Milner's remark about the bicarb. on the dressing table is missing, and the entire scene outside where Foyle asks Sam who Connie was seeing and she tries to fudge about Andrew's involvement is gone...

Outside the building Foyle tells Sam that it looks like murder. Sam confirms that it was Rex Talbot that Connie was seeing.
"What about the other girl? Was she seeing anyone?" He already knows the answer, but Sam is reluctant to give it.
    "I don't really know."
"You don't really know?… Oh, look, for God's sake just tell me the truth. Do you think I'm an idiot? Really! Don't keep anything from me just because it involves my son, alright? She was seeing Andrew, wasn't she?"
Sam admits it, but says that she knows Andrew is not involved in this. Foyle snaps, "Well, of course he's involved, it's quite obvious that he's involved… and it's murder and that means nobody is protected, not even him. You understand?" He walks off to his car.

All cut. Especially odd considering that the exchange "I know Andrew's not involved in this, sir" and his reply "Well, of course he's involved, and it's murder and that means no one's protected, not even him!" were used in the PBS trailers but aren't in the show!

  • As Foyle and Milner walk out of the building after interviewing Violet, the DCS runs a hand wearily over his face. Milner says he realises that this has put him in a difficult position and Foyle agrees,

    "That's a bloody understatement, Milner!"
"I'm sure Andrew is above suspicion."
"Is he? He's not above mine."

  • Foyle and Milner go to the airbase to speak to the CO before interviewing Rex and Andrew. This rather testy exchange has been cut.

  • As Foyle and Milner leave the fuel depot after interviewing Violet, O'Halloran sees them and asks Bennet who they are. Bennett tells him they are police. O'Halloran looks worried and Bennett informs him that Connie is dead.

  • Later, when Foyle is examining Connie's diary in his office, a major part of the scene is cut. This includes his saying he'll get Sam out of the depot, the decision to find out if "either one of them knew she was pregnant", and the remark to Milner about his wife taking bicarb for morning sickness.

"Incidentally, em, bicarbonate of soda… it turns out that Connie Dewar might have been taking it for morning sickness. Spoken to your wife?"

  • The entire scene with Andrew and Violet walking, where she breaks up with him, is gone. Andrew asks if Vi told his father that they were going to be married and when she replies "Yes" he says he wishes she hadn't. It becomes obvious that he does not want to talk about marriage any more. Vi becomes angry, saying that talking marriage was just a way for him to get her into bed. "I've had enough of you. Connie always said that you can never trust a pilot and she was right!" End of relationship.

  • When Foyle meets with the doctor, they stop at Foyle's explaining that 'D' in Connie's diary stood for 'doctor' and then took out the final comment from the doctor about Connie's death being a terrible waste of a young life, to which Foyle adds:"Two!"

  • Foyle's second interview with Gannon, where they discuss Connie's pregnancy, seems fairly complete, except for the cutting of the nicely dramatic lines...

"Death seems to follow you around, Mr Foyle."
"Quite the opposite. I follow it."

Again, PBS used it in the trailer but cut it from the show!

Many thanks to the avid FW viewers at tmkb for noting the cut scenes.
