Scenes Cut From the US Screening on PBS

  • In the first kitchen conversation between Harry and Lucy Markham, part of the dialogue has been cut. After Harry says their father died from pneumonia:
Harry: which he got from [working the farm] in the coldest winter on record. And if we don't get out of here, we're going to end up the same way.
Lucy: We can make a go of it here, Harry!

  • The next cut is in the scene where they're planning the Home Guard exercise. A fair amount of dialogue was cut here. Foyle, concerned about public safety, asks about the use of live ammunition -- "there has to be absolute clarity on that point, for everybody's sake." Brigadier Harcourt tells him that it will be restricted to "designated areas". The Brigadier goes on to say that "what I don't want" is any interference from civilian traffic, that the military police should keep them well away from the exercise. Foyle replies that if the purpose of the game is to simulate real invasion conditions, in a real invasion the roads would be choked with refugees and the Home Guard would have to deal with that. The pompous old goat tells him, "You're here as a referee, Foyle. I think you can leave the military planning to me." Foyle looks a tad offended, but just says "right" rather coolly, and lets it pass.

The illogic of this cut is that later, when the Brigadier asks him for advice during the exercise, Foyle replies, "I don't have ideas, brigadier. I'm only the referee!" If you haven't seen the initial insult, you don't get the delicious irony of Foyle's subtle revenge!

  • After the briefing, Foyle leaves the meeting with his old sergeant, Captain Jack Devlin. The two exchange some personal talk: Devlin asks if he's gotten a new sergeant and asks about Andrew.
Devlin: They didn't let you transfer then? I heard a rumour that you were going to work with General Ismay. [note: this is a reference to a plot thread in The German Woman.] Foyle: No, it didn't work out. Devlin: You're damned good at your job. Foyle: Well, if that's the case, what am I still doing here, I wonder?

  • After Foyle and Milner leave the Walker home the morning after the burglary, Sir Reginald lies to his wife and reiterates that nothing was stolen.

  • Next scene cut: The fishing scene between Beck and Foyle.
Beck: I wonder if your Sergeant Milner has forgiven me.
Foyle: Well, I wouldn't underestimate him.
    Beck: I haven't, and I won't!
Foyle: I saw Jack Devlin the other day.
Beck: Ah, yes! Sergeant Devlin! I remember him. An interesting young man (said with significant emphasis). Foyle doesn't comment.
Then they talk about how the fish aren't biting, and move into the part of the scene not cut.

  • Next scene cut: The four children we saw earlier collecting salvage are brought in to the station for breaking into their school to steal paper so they can win the salvage drive.
Foyle: So, what you’ve got so say for yourselves?
Brian: We were doing our duty!
Tim: That’s what the lady on the wireless told us to do!
    Sam: Lady Denman, sir, WVS.
Foyle: You broke into your school, is that right? Looking for what?
    Brian: Salvage!
    Foyle: Such as?
    Brian: Paper…
    Tim: Saucepans…
    Brian: Or frying pans…
    Tim: Coat Hangers…
Foyle at this point with a very surprised look while listening to the items the kids were listing.
    Brian: Shoe boxes…
    Tim: Shoe trees…
    Brian: Vacuum cleaner tubes…
Tim: They can all be used, the lady said so.
Brian: Did you know a single chop bone, commit a quarter of that, can make two cartridges!
Foyle: Right (looking back at Sam with a worried, puzzled grin). Well, I’ve heard of children breaking out of school. But breaking in? And how did you get in, over the railings?
Brian: No! Someone’s already taken them. (Sam smiles)
Foyle: Well, what you do is very commendable, but you can’t just go on breaking into buildings, all right?
Sergeant: Do you want me to lock them up sir?
    Tim: WHAT!?!
Sergeant: Six months hard labor, on bread and water. (Sam smiles) That should teach them.
Foyle: Well, perhaps not this time sergeant. Well, listen. Better stick to paper from now on, all right?
Sam: Leave the chop bones to the professionals.
Foyle: Yeah, maybe you need a new commanding officer to keep you out of trouble. Captain Stewart!
Sam: Sir!?! (With a surprised look)
Foyle: You’ve been promoted. Keep an eye on them!
Sam: Right. Troops, quick march, and get your hands out of your pockets.

Why this doesn't make sense: We later see Sam drilling the children and letting them have buns and lemonade, but without the earlier scene, we have no idea WHY she's doing it!

  • The scene where Beck was playing the organ, the entire beginning scene between him and the priest was cut up until Pierce says that Beck is playing German music.

  • In the car with Devlin and Foyle, the end bit is cut. Devlin goes on telling Foyle that people like Markham should be shot to which Foyle worriedly responds to by just saying, “All right”. Devlin then tells Foyle not to mind as they are nearly there at the exercise field. Relevance: This explains why Foyle was suspicious of Devlin right after Markham got shot. Keep in mind how Foyle was sort of rude to Devlin when Devlin asks Foyle if he could see Markham’s dead body. This cut scene explains that as well as to why Foyle tells Milner that he should check in to Devlin’s alibi himself.

  • Some dialogue involving Markham, Connor and Kirk at the tent, before the exercises, where Connor and Kirk explain to Harry why they know it was him that broke into the Walker’s safe. They knew it was Harry by the way he drugged the dogs where if it was Kirk or Connor, those dogs would have been dead.

  • The scene where Reginald Walker tells his wife that he is going out for a walk during the exercise, the end was cut short. Alison tells Walker that he’ll never love her that way he loved his other wife; how she feels like living in her shadow, and how he and Simon are shutting her out of their own private world. She then asks him why they can’t go back to London to which Walker tells her that these are difficult times and to not ask questions and just trust him and enjoy what they have. These cut scenes between Reginald Walker and his wife explains how his wife ends up leaving him in the end. It wasn’t just the little things shown in the US version, which really would not make sense.

  • During the home guard exercises, just before the third shot, the line where Philby says, “The game is over, will you please let us go.” This was continuity to what Philby later tells Foyle about getting to the “murder area” too late after hearing the shots being fired.

  • The scene where Sam runs across the salvage kids right after Tim gets bitten was completely cut! Sam asks Tim after seeing his wound, “Wounded in action?” She asks them where they were salvaging papers and Brian told her at Walker’s house, where Walker sent his German dogs loose on them. Tim then says, “Roberman” Sam corrects him by telling him he meant Doberman and told him they have to get him to the hospital and asks if he told his parents. Brian tells Sam, ”No, if you think that’s bad, you should see what his dad can do”

  • The next scene cut is between Sir Reginald and his wife, at the stairs in their house, where he apologizes to what he did to the kids and that he lost control and will see that the child gets some sort of compensation. She tells him it wasn’t control that he lost but pretense. He apologizes to her again to which she tells him, “But you’re a civilized man.” And then walks up the stairs.

  • The scene where Milner visits Mr. Browne at the court house was cut in the beginning where Mr. Browne recognizes Milner as a witness in the case involving the pottery workers that strangled the other with a belt.

  • When Foyle and company starts searching the salvage the kids have collected, the end of the scene was cut shorter as Foyle actually digs in the salvage much longer before cutting to the next scene. (Just a couple more seconds of screen time of Foyle cut, that’s all)

  • After Harry's death, Simon Walker goes to see Lucy. He offers sympathy and says he wants to help any way he can. She offers him tea. All this beginning got cut; we came in in the middle of the scene, where he's threatening her and touching her, then kisses her.

  • This entire scene between Foyle and Devlin in the precinct was cut. Here’s the dialogue:
Devlin: I’m rejoining my unit. We’re being sent to North Africa.
    Foyle: Well, good luck,
Devlin: Thank you, sir. I want to say, I’m sorry about Markham.
Foyle: Sorry that he’s dead or sorry about what happened six months ago?
Devlin: Would I need to apologize for that?
    Foyle: Well, you tell me.
    Devlin: He was guilty sir.
Foyle: Well, yes he was found guilty of breaking and entering, but the theft charges against him had to be dropped.
    Devlin: Did it?
    Foyle: Yes!
    Devlin: Why sir?
Foyle: The necklace that we submitted as primary evidence had to be withdrawn.
    Devlin: Who withdrew it?
    Foyle: I don’t know.
    Devlin: Why?
Foyle: Because, Devlin, it turned out to be you who took the necklace from the house he had broken in to, it was you who planted it in Markham’s own house. You were so determined to see the man jailed that you wrecked the case against him to the point that the judge almost set him free. You perverted the course of justice and what’s more he might still be alive if it hadn’t been for you unforgivable interference.
Devlin: Even though I was in France when the case came to court? Why didn’t you tell me what had happened?
Foyle: Reid and I chose not to disclose these details to the court nor to you. He was guilty. He was guilty despite the evidence, not because of it. You had chosen to fight for your country and were no longer around. It seemed to serve no purpose.
Devlin: You could have had me charged.
    Foyle: Yes.
    Devlin: You still can.
Foyle: Yes…I think you should go. (Nodding his head towards the door)
    Devlin: Sir. (Salutes Foyle)

  • Final scene cut was just after the church service. Outside the church, just after Pierce tells Foyle that she has bad news.
Pierce: Sir Reginald Walker is in the clear.
Foyle: Well, I appreciate you telling me. Thank you for taking the trouble.
Pierce: I though I owed it to Stephen Beck. And it occurred to me that you may not want to give up. Walker has his supporters but there are plenty of people who dislikes him as much as you and I.

Many thanks to the avid FW viewers at tmkb for noting the cut scenes.
