Scenes Cut From the US Screening on PBS

  • The scene where Capt. Hammond is defusing the bomb in the playground is shortened, lessening the suspense, but it's not a serious loss. After he has successfully defused it, however, and returns to his colleagues and the watching crowd, the following was cut from the end of the scene:

Woman in crowd: Excuse me. My name's Brenda Wilson. I live here, just down the road. I want you to know I think what you do really is tops.
    Hammond: Thank you.
Miss Wilson: Me and the others, we've had a whip 'round just to show you we're grateful Hold yer hand out! (He does so and she empties coins out of a small bag into his palm.) Here you are. You have a drink on us. (The surrounding crowd applauds.)
H: Thank you. We'll do that.
ARP Warden (surprised): You allowed to keep that?
H: Nope. All money received has to be paid into the Royal Engineers Association Bank. I'll send you the receipt. (Then under his breath as he gets into the truck) Twerp.

A nice look at both the bomb squad's attitude toward their work and toward the members of the public who depend upon them.

  • Some dialogue was cut from the scene where Gwen and Jack Archer are walking hand-in-hand discussing the King's Head incident:

Jack: It was a thousand kilos underneath the playground off the high street.
Gwen: Why hadn't it gone off?
J: Dunno … probably too low, or it could've been a dodgy fuse. Bloody Jerries! They call themselves the master race and they can't even make a decent bomb.
G: I wish you didn't have to do it.
    J: If I'd a quid for every time you've said that -
    G: You should transfer!
J: They won't even consider it for another month. 'Til then, there's only one way out. At least it's quick and painless.
G: Don't say that! Don't ever say that.
    J: Maybe they'll lock me up …
The scene picks up as shown. The only other noticeable cut from this scene was that their kiss at the end was cut short.

  • The next cut was Hammond's testimony before the magistrate over Archer and the gun:

Hammond: Corporal Archer is an exemplary member of my squad. I'd like to mention that since he joined me he's been involved in dealing with 28 UXBs, one of which exploded, killing an officer and wounding several others. His behavior at the King's Head was completely out of character.
    Magistrate (reprovingly): He was intoxicated.
Hammond: Well, yes, ma'am. But … um … if you'd been sitting in a hole with a thousand kilograms of high explosive between your legs and a ticking fuse, you might need a drink, too.
Magistrate (still more stiffly): Thank you.

Then they move into Sam's testimony.

  • After he has been released from the charge:

Gwen: Don't you get yourself into any more trouble, Jack Archer.
Jack: What about you? They'll dock you a day's pay.
G: Oh, I don't mind. I wasn't going to let you be here on your own.
Hammond (approaching): Sorry to interrupt you, Corporal, but - what was it now? oh, yes, of course! - there's a war on. Come on.
Jack (to Gwen): See you soon.

  • Jack and Hammond leave. Sam then approaches Gwen.

Sam: Hello, Gwen. How are you?
Gwen: Fine … better now, thanks to you. Thank you for what you said.
S: I was glad to help. And - congratulations!
G: Oh, the wedding! Are you coming?
S: Am I coming? Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world!
G: Listen, I don't suppose you'd fancy a cup of tea and a sandwich? We're only round the corner.
S: As long as your father doesn't report me to Mr. Foyle!
G: (laughing) It's all right. I'm absent without leave, too.

Then they cut to the two girls walking to Gwen's. Gwen tells her she's a welder, etc.

  • Whole scene missing in Gwen's garden:

G: Can't have a cake for the wedding - well, we can, but we're not allowed icing. There's a sugar order, would you believe it? We can have chocolate, but it's not the same. Can't get confetti, either, so I've got the girls in the office saving up the little bits of paper you get from punches … we had to fight to get film for the photographs..
S: Why not wait until after the war is over?
G: That's what Dad said. I can't wait for Jack. You know the work he does … if we wait, we might never …(getting emotional) oh, sorry. I love him. I've always loved him and I just … (breaks down and cries).
S: I'm sorry, Gwen, I didn't mean to upset you. Here, have a hanky. (passes one over) I'm sure you'll get through it all right. There were fewer bombs last week. Maybe the Germans are running out.
G: I haven't even got a maid of honour. Jenny's in America, she can't come over.
S: Why don't you ask one of the welders? In fact, you could have a whole bunch of them standing outside the church, wielding their welding rods!
    G: It's a registry office.
S: You don't need a cake. You don't need anything so long as you have each other.
G: I don't suppose … well, I suppose I should've thought of you in the first place, really, but - would you be my maid of honour? If it weren't for you Jack might not even be free to get married.
    S: I'd be delighted.
    G: Really?
S: Yes. Why not? I love weddings. My father's a vicar!
G: I know Jack'd be pleased. He was grateful to you turning up the way you did.
S: There's only one problem .. maid of honour. How am I going to get a dress?

  • Cut scene of Sam having supper at the Rivers' home with Gwen and her father. This scene is set between the Royal Engineers removing the bomb from the shipyard and the conversation between Hammond, Archer and Ernie Jones at the Kings' head.

Gwen: I'm so glad you're going to be there, Sam.
Sam: I still don't know what I'm going to wear. This rationing! Eleven coupons for a dress!
G: Well, they'll still take margarine coupons.
    S: Mmmmm. I haven't got any left.
G: I'll get Mum to run you up something if you like. She's making me a dress out of butter muslin.
S: I'm not sure I'd look my best in butter muslin. They say Reed and Pettigrew will turn a blind eye, although if they did I'm sure your father would have to arrest me.
Sergeant Rivers (sternly): We're not having any of that.
G: Well, at least we're having a proper spread. I went to the Food Office today to get permits for the extra food.
Sgt. R: Half a pound of butter for twenty guests. That won't go far.
G: Stop grumbling, Dad. You just don't want me to get married because you won't have me looking after you any more.
Sgt. R: So where is he then, that young man of yours? I thought we were seeing him this evening.
    G: Didn't turn up.
Sgt. R: That's not like him.
G: Maybe he was embarrassed after what happened.
    Sgt. R: I'm not surprised.
    G: Well, I'm surprised he didn't call.
S: I saw him at the dockyard. Just after the bomb fell.
G: I heard he was down there. I didn't dare go and look.
Sgt. R: So where is he?
    G: I don't know, Dad. I'm sure he'll turn up.

  • A very brief cut from the scene where Mason and his wife are brought in handcuffed. The camera pans over to the door where Foyle and Milner are entering. Both look satisfied with their successful arrest. At the desk, Sgt. Rivers greets them:

Sgt. Rivers: Everything all right, sir?
    Foyle: It certainly is.
Sgt. R: Well, I'm sorry to spoil it for you, sir. You've got a visitor. Assistant Commissioner Rose, sir. He's back.
Foyle (scowling): Right. Thank you. Steels himself and marches toward his office.

Note: These were all the cuts I could spot but there may have been more.

Many thanks to Lynette for noting the cut scenes.
