Sir Archilbald McIndoe Archibald McIndoe (1900-1960) - Kiwi-born, he was appointed consultant in Plastic Surgery to the Royal Air Force in 1938, performing outstanding work in the rehabilitation of badly burnt aircrew, physically and psychologically. The successful attack by General Herbert Plumer's 2nd Army on Messines Ridge, was a precursor to Passchendale (3rd Battle of Ypres). The initial surprise attack consisted of 19 underground mines placed underneath the German lines, detonated simultaneously at 3.10am on June 7, 1917.
