Expert safe cracker, he used to work with fellow burglars Michael Connor and Albert Clarke. Markham was the last arrest made by Devlin before he joined up. Devlin tried to ensure a conviction by planting a stolen necklace, but it backfired when Stephen Beck argued his case. Beck convinces Markham to burgle Sir Reginald Walker's place looking for a letter proving complicity with the Nazi's. Instead Markham removes a gold box (originally stolen from a Jewish family) that Simon Walker brought back with him from Switzerland. Simon accidentally (on purpose) kills Markham while trying to find out where Markham had hidden the box.
