Nephew of David Barrett, he is on a weeks leave from the Royal Navy. After serving in Iceland he was shipped to Scotland and has made the long journey down to Sussex by bus to visit his fiancée Susan Davies and stay with his uncle. He has known his Susan Davies since school days and is concerned when she fails to meet him from the bus. His fears for their relationship are confirmed when his uncle tells him he has seen Susan gallivanting with American soldiers. Ben was miserable on arrival and is even more depressed when he hears tales of Susan's behaviour. She is murdered before he has chance to see her and his Uncle David assumes Ben to be her killer. He provides him with an unasked for alibi which Ben dourly refutes.
