A man with a distinctive profile; he is the weak, avaricious landlord of the Wheatsheaf Public House in Hilton village, he colludes with Susan Davies to install an illicit still on his licensed premises but gets cold feet when he feels threatened by the police investigation into the death of Will Grayson. Susan Davies blackmails him into keeping the still in production. An unexpected reveller at the 'Big Howdy' dance his permanent hang-dog expression is eventually rearranged by Sgt Milner in an uncharacteristic (and unrealistic) show of anger.
